New Siding and Kohlrabi

The hard part of the siding project is finished. Check that one off the list. Special thanks to Tom!

I still need to do some caulking and then painting and trim, but this is progress. And next a new back porch. And then a brick oven on the back porch. And meanwhile I’ve been obsessed with the new bathroom. I almost had the shower installed today, but ALL of the valve joints were leaking. I’m not a very good plumber – work is slow, joints leak and a huge ass-crack on display (seriously, I need a new belt). Unfortunately, I may need to disassemble to reach the leaky bits at this point.

But on the bright side, the Kohlrabi looks ready! We planted a different purple variety this year along with a few of the white – purple seem to have done better so far.

How Much Wood…

Jake and I scared a woodchuck/groundhog out of the tree near the house this morning. Apparently they climb trees. I didn’t know that. Jake chased it down to the garden, but once it stopped running Jake didn’t really know what to do. Buddy wasn’t around to kill it, so I called Jake away and the fat guy waddled off into the high grass.

woodchuck or groundhog

Kind of unfortunate. Now it knows where the garden is located. I can only hope it was so scared it wasn’t really paying attention to all the greens it could munch on later.

I guess this means two more weeks of Spring, right?

Bathroom, Buddy, Blooms

A hodgepodge posting for everyone this morning. Just in a hodgepodgy kind of mood. Some might call it lack of focus. I call it multi-tasking. First up is the bathroom progress. It’s not going fast enough for my liking, but it going. Still many questions remain — mostly about drainage.

Meanwhile, poppies have opened up everywhere. Even in the affectionately named “disaster bed”, the poppies have busted out with sparkling red bloomage.

And finally, the cutest neighbor’s dog ever — Buddy found a new comfortable location. I think he might like that it’s a bit too high for Jake. Or maybe he wants to go for a ride.

Doesn’t Smell Like Roses

Life out in the country can’t all be about pretty flowers, juicy fruits and crisp vegetables. Sometimes it’s about waste. Our septic tank was unfortunately planted too close to our well so we had it moved!

And in the process it seemed a good time to move our entire bathroom to the east side of the house. Putting these two projects together just made a lot of sense since some waste lines could be abandoned once the shift was made. Only problem is abandoning those lines means no more old bathroom! And while I knew this day was coming, I did not expect it to arrive with such gusto. We returned home Wednesday to find the tank dug, and received a call that night saying it would move on Thursday.

The new bathroom doesn’t even have walls yet. The old back door is still in there. Basically nothing is done except that the plumbing is stubbed in. I quickly learned to set a toilet (aka stool). It was awkward but not terribly difficult – assuming I did it correctly.

no privacy toilet

No leaks or drips so far. Not much privacy either. We are working on that some today. Shower is due to arrive today, but then they said it was due to arrive two days ago. Floods understandably causing delays. We will likely be without a shower for a bit, but at least we don’t need to rent a port-o-potty.

The Interactive Garden

I was tempted to make a slideshow, but slides get dull after a while. Then I thought I could make a little movie with some narration, but I couldn’t think of anything incredibly clever and fun to say. So I made a little game of it. There are 34 closeup images in the garden. Click on the garden to find and see them. I put a little counter in the bottom right corner so you don’t need to keep track. These images were all taken on June 14th. (If it seems nothing appears below, just click in the space).
