The Plan

We want to be farmers

Nostalgia Blast

Anne’s 20 year high school reunion is coming up this Summer. That stings a bit. Makes me think of math classes and back-stage aromas. And then, at a recent cook-out, our neighbor brought us an old aerial photo of our place (she grew up in our house).

Click on the image to get a bigger view. It’s probably not too amazing to anyone who hasn’t been out here lately, but the changes are pretty dramatic. I’m not sure when the photo was taken, but since that time we lost two out buildings and numerous trees. This would be tons more meaningful if I had a recent aerial photo to share, but I don’t. So you will just have to take my word for it – the transformation is incredible.

I think we’ve done a nice job at re-establishing trees on the property. And thanks to Mother Nature along with Uncle Global Warming making their contributions, what looks like a dust bowl then is now lush with green grasses. Even the driveway now has a bit of a carpet.

I want to pick ‘em

The garden veggies and fruits are growing well. And they have been shamefully neglected with all the mowing, housework and web projects. Little cucumber, watermelon, cantaloupe and squash are coming along. Won’t be too much longer now. Had my first ripe cherry tomato the other day. Tasted like candy it’s so sweet. And no tomato worms yet. But the season isn’t over yet either.

More Fruit Please

When we were thinking of all the plans we might have for living out in the country, self-sustaining, gardening, etc, one of the givens was we would be growing fruit. And lots of it. Our first year, we ordered and planted over a dozen bare-root fruit trees and most of those did survive the winter. But they are still so small. No fruit set this year. I blame it on the apparent lack of bee activity, but they are young and shouldn’t be fruiting yet anyway.

We also moved strawberries, planted a large amount of raspberries, and about five blueberry bushes. Oh, and the grapes too. So, we were doing pretty well, but not good enough.

new blueberries and more fruit trees

I counted up the remaining space in our existing blueberry row and estimated how many fruit trees it would take to fill our killed-sod solarized spot. Then I gave Anne her dream mission: go and find six or seven blueberry bushes and about seven fruit trees. It didn’t take too long for the plants to be found and now they need planting. Where is the shovel?

Plants on Sale

on sale plants

It’s only the middle of Summer and already Anne has found a plant sale with some 75% off ornamental grasses and 50% off perennials. The trick is to get all these to survive. But then again, with prices like these we can afford a little die off. I’d list the booty, but I haven’t really looked that closely at it yet. I know there are some peonies in there.Â
